Steven Gregory South African, b. 1952
"Each day in my studio involves problem solving and learning through application. My aim is to understand all kinds of materials; their possibilities and the different ways I can use them with some degree of eloquence in order to convey meaning through the sculpture I produce."
Born in Johannesburg, Gregory moved to London in the 1970s, attending art school during a highly experimental period. Determined to engage with tools and traditional techniques he became trained in stone masonry whilst also experimenting with other media. His exacting approach to making and drawing is driven by his wide ranging knowledge of craftsmanship and is also inspired by setting himself daily challenges to create work from a wide range of materials – from bullet casings to cast bronze. Steven Gregory’s work is imbued with a wicked sense of humour, celebrating life and often poking fun at our collective anxieties about death.
