Jane Ackroyd British, b. 1957

About

"My practice as a sculptor is central to my identity. Sculpture allows me to express how I feel and so connect with others and the world around me. It keeps me in touch with my earlier unselfconscious self where the world had a connectedness: the birds to the trees to the sky. It is a way of losing myself in that world again. A world of shapes, light and texture."

Jane Ackroyd discovered steel during her undergraduate degree at St Martin's School of Art and never looked back. It could be said that Ackroyd's work is a celebration of steel – utilising its flexibility and strength to explore abstraction and create a sense of drama and beauty.

For Ackroyd, sculpture offers a vehicle to connect to her unconscious self. Drawing on memories of a bohemian childhood in 1960s Notting Hill allows Ackroyd to explore shape, light and texture in her work. In recent years, Ackroyd has experimented with painting her sculptures with vibrant colours to further emphasise the forms.
