Robert Jones British/Manx, b. 1971

About

Robert Jones is inspired by the industrial and rural landscapes of the Isle of Man. He works primarily in steel and other metals, often repurposing found objects to create a dialogue about sustainability and the environment.

Robert Jones is a Manx sculptor and member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. He has had solo exhibitions in the UK and Isle of Man, his work has been exhibited widely and he has pieces in the Isle of Arts Council collection and the Manx Museum’s national collection.

Growing up with an artistic background in the Isle of Man, Jones has been inspired by the strong heritage of Manx sculpture, particularly through the work of his mentor Michael Sandle RA and of Bryan Kneale RA. Jones has trained in stone sculpture and a wide range of metalwork techniques and currently specialises in steel sculpture. His work is particularly suited to outdoor display and he has pieces in public parks, gardens and the grounds of schools as well as in private collections.

The nature, landscapes and agricultural and fishing heritage of the Isle of Man and their juxtaposition have also inspired Jones. Robert has work space in his local shipyard, where he has also worked as an industrial welder.

Recent work has been heavily influenced by the climate and ecological crises and his hopes for a better future for the planet, themes which informed his latest exhibition Crucible at the House of Manannan Gallery in Peel Isle of Man which was featured by the BBC and ended in January 2024.
