Sue Freeborough British, b. 1941
“I aim for shifting unsettled work with informed and open-ended flexibility that offers both fun and seriousness.”
Sue Freeborough came to sculpture with a wealth of earlier experience, spanning nursing, dance and motherhood. Her wry comments on the human condition are supported by a thoughtful and intellectual approach to making, spanning a broad range of disciplines. Her work celebrates the freedom and exhilaration of our physical being; encouraging us to view the body as an instrument to interpret our shared cultural and emotional lives.
Freeborough works intuitively across materials as varied as bronze, glass and bark-cloth. Through this, a process of research and exploration informs the outcome of her work, often drawing parallels between outward appearances and inner ideas, doublings and division, or absence and presence.
