Bryan Kneale RA Manx, b. 1930

About

Bryan Kneale’s work is best known for its elegantly poised abstract form. Twisting, spinning and welding his varied materials his sculpture effortlessly inhabits its space, resting lighly and yet encapsulating an inner tension.

Born on the Isle of Man, Bryan Kneale began his career as a successful painter painting and was commissioned to create portraits for the a range of well known figures of the 1950s. From the 1960s he turned to making sculpture and in keeping with the Post World War aesthetic in Britain, began by using found materials due to the expense of casting bronze. Kneale has continued his love of assemblage, welding metals and objects together to craft ever more complex and interesting works. From dismantling bombs to using corrugated sheets of iron, Kneale’s works come together on instinct as and when he is making. He describes his work as being very much ‘of the moment.’

Kneale is also a well-respected educator and curator. Elected a Royal Academician in 1974, Kneale’s work is held in many public and private collections throughout the world including the Tate.
