Jon Buck British, b. 1951
About
Inspired by a love of colour, Jon Buck's work explores animal symbols and the human connection to the natural world, holding a vital message about our planet's future.
Jon Buck began his career as a zoo keeper in Bristol. After being tasked with illustrating the aviary’s information boards, he not only stumbled upon a natural talent but a love of depicting animals that has lasted a lifetime. Although there is a degree of abstraction in his later work, he uses the power of suggestion to engage his viewers and has spent decades perfecting his own unique sculptural language and symbolism that makes his work instantly recognisable.
Buck has recently turned to exploring the environmental impact of the Anthropocene. This has been reflected in the evolution of his colour palette, choosing to apply darker earthy tones in comparison to his usual bright vivid colours of choice. Buck also draws inspiration from microbiology and often references evolutionary theory in his works.
