Merete Rasmussen Danish, b. 1974

About

"The point at which I decide the colour varies. Sometimes I know from the start, other times I change my mind a few times during the process. Most of the time the decision is made because it ‘feels right’, so it is very intuitive. Using more than one colour is a continuation of my exploration of what colour can do for the form, and my love for colours."

Merete Rasmussen’s highly desirable hand built ceramics are exquisitely executed and take many hours of building up and scraping back the clay to create her energetic flowing forms. Rasmussen is inspired by nature and mathematical constructions and is interested in capturing movement in her work with forms that stretch or curl round themselves. Her soft yet precise curves and sharply defined edges explore both positive and negative space and she is intrigued by the idea of one connected edge or continuous surface running through an entire form.

Born in Denmark, Rasmussen has lived in the UK since 2005. Her works can be found in a number of important public institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Museum of Art and Design in New York.
