Crows and Ravens appear in many different mythologies and folk stories across the globe. Norse folklore tells of norsemen, including Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarsson who discovered Iceland, using ravens for navigational assistance. They reportedly carried the birds aboard their ships and when they suspected land was near, the birds would be released. Flying to a high altitude, the birds would search for land but if they could find none, would return to the vessel, telling the norsemen that that land was not nearby.
