'Bluebird' is emblematic of Jon Buck's ability to pair rich colours with simplified, gestural lines and shapes. While the form is abstracted, a product of the artist's subconscious, the positioning of the head and beak speaks to a curious nature, and the irresistibly tactile texture of the bronze makes the work even more charming.

Buck continuously revisits the theme of birds within his sculpture and drawings, a love of which stems from his first job when he worked at as a keeper at bird Bristol Zoo. Here his skills were put to good use, he painted images, signs and labels, describing for visitors the enormous diversity of the birds in his care, picking out the most distinctive features of each species so that identification was easy.

Buck studied at Nottingham and Manchester Art Schools. He is a Member of the Royal West of England Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He has completed many public commissions including Returning to Embrace for Canary Wharf in London and Ship to Shore for Portishead Quays. His work is regularly exhibited both in the UK and abroad and is held in many public and private collections.
