For those familiar with the work of Charlotte Mayer, animals such as ‘Cockerel’ may seems an unlikely subject for the artist to explore compared to her signature natural, organic flowing forms. In the 1970s and 1980s however, Mayer’s exploration into nature began with the study of small welded animals which was inspired partly due to an increasing amount of time spent in the Dartmoor countryside and an encouragement to produce more work in metal. These small works, later cast in bronze, are elegant examples of studies in distilled abstraction.
