George Fullard 1923-1973

About

George Fullard’s sculpture is imbued with expression. His early work focuses primarily on joyful and tender representations of the human figure often depicting mothers with young children or babies.

Born in Sheffield, Fullard preferred to call himself an ‘image maker’ rather than a sculptor and particularly enjoyed the surprising juxtapositions that resulted from assembling disparate objects. His experiences in World War II fuelled much of his later work and he would undoubtedly have continued to make powerful works had he not passed away at the young age of 50.

Today Fullard’s work can be found in a number of private and public collections, including the Arts Council of Great Britain, Leeds City Art Galleries, Sheffield Galleries and Museums and the Tate Collection, London. Several bronze sculptures are on permanent public display in Sheffield City Centre and the Graves Gallery held an important retrospective exhibition of his work in 2023.
